day thirty-eight: whoops
Well, it had to happen sometime. I missed a day. Sorry about that. I did do stuff, but I honestly forgot to take pictures and write anything up.
I ended up trying on and fiddling around with the fit of the mock-up. Turns out that the front panel was too big and the gusset was too small (the right thigh blew out when I sat down). So I needed to come up with a plan to fix these issues.
this is the original shape for the gusset
It appeared that the gusset narrowed too quickly as it tapered towards the knee, so I changed the shape to be more rounded, almost a football shape, and added around an inch and a half for a bit more ease.
The front was still pretty straightforward, but it can be hard to see what you’re doing when you’re fitting them on yourself, so it is a bit of a crapshoot.
What I ended up doing was cutting the trapezoidal front panel into a rectangle.
This had the end result of making the front of the crotch narrower than would fit nicely on the gusset, so that needed a bit of alteration, too.
when i make the final pattern piece, i‘ll just flatten out the darts and call it good.
I took two darts in the gusset along the front edge, which flattened out the curve, and then the gusset fit nicely into the space.
I still need to add a little to the gusset on the right thigh and bring in the width of the lower leg. I also need to move the outside seam farther back on the leg, but that’s just about recutting the seam line where I want it when I prep the pieces to make the pattern.
So that’s where things sit right now. I’m going to figure out the waistband when I assemble the wool pieces, because the fabrics will just behave differently.
I hope to make my pattern tomorrow. My mom has a roll of builder’s paper I’m going to use. In the meantime… I’m going to bed. Night, y’all.
