day sixty-four: actual productivity

I got to work on the waistband tonight. I decided that I wanted to line it, both for strength and stability and for comfort, so I dove into my scrap bin.

scrap was called “cabbage” in period

I had a nice long strip of linen left over from my shirt, but I needed to add a bit, so I pulled threads from another, shorter strip and made it the same width. Both pieces were still hemmed from where I washed the fabric (I hem it to keep it from fraying away in the washer), so I left the hem and made sure those edges were together.

after i joined the edges, I flat felled them

I folded the strip in thirds and pressed it with one of my linen smoothers (the other one is at my mom’s).

it’s ridiculously satisfying in the hand

Then I took the scrap bit I have from cutting out the pants and cut a strip 6” wide off the selvedge. I cut off all the fringed bits, and as it too was too short, I sewed on an extension. I turned the seam allowances first and stitched them down with a herringbone stitch, then joined the turned edges with a baseball stitch for strength.

you can hardly tell where i joined the edges

That’s as far as I’ve gotten tonight. I think it’s pretty good progress, to be honest.

I can’t wait for these to be done.

Time for bed. Night, y’all.
