day fifty-three: back to the spindle
I went a little mad on Etsy a week or so ago, and I bought not only the two modern spindles from 3gwoodworks, but a medieval-style spindle shaft in walnut from HersheyFiberArts.
it's so lovely
The whorl was given to me as a token at Artifacts of a Life (I regret that I don't remember who gave it to me), and it's been waiting for a shaft since February. It only weighs 10 grams, or 0.4 ounces, so it's quite light. The shaft is around 5 grams, or 0.2 ounces, so still pretty light. As such, it does get a bit wobbly at first, and then as you get more singles on it, it spins more and more smoothly.
I have another whorl, cast in pewter, that I was sent from a friend in England. It weighs 15 grams, or 0.5 ounces, so half again as much as the ceramic one, though smaller and with a different profile.
I spent about twenty minutes spinning a very small bit of BFL fiber, and got quite a respectable little cop on the spindle. I think I want to maybe dye this with walnut - I think it would be fitting, since the shaft itself is walnut.
i think i enjoyed spinning with this even more than with the new modern spindles
So that's the art report for tonight. I'm going to need more thread for the tunic, so at least some of it will be spun on this spindle. It's incredibly satisfying, and I can't wait to take it to events.
Tonight, though, it's time for bed. Night, y'all.
