day seventy- two: plus ça change…

I'm spending some time researching tunics and deciding what I want mine to look like. I thought at first that I ought to continue to stretch myself and make a fitted Hedeby tunic, but I am tired. I need a break in my comfort zone.

The two tunics I found in my research are the Skjoldehamn and and Kragelund tunics. They are dated to the very end of the Viking Age, but I feel like styles changed more slowly and less drastically in early period, so I'm okay with making a tunic based on these two, because there are very few differences between them.

For real, the only differences I see between the two are the neckline and the sleeves. The Kragelund tunic has a v-shaped neckline both front and back, while the Skjoldehamn tunic only has a vee in the front. The sleeves on the Kragelund tunic have a sort of funnel shape at the top, while the Skjoldehamn tunic's sleeves are basically straight tubes. The Kragelund tunic has no underarm gussets and the sleeves are pieced, while the Skjoldehamn tunic has very small gussets. Other than that, the bodies have no shoulder seam, the armscyes are flat, and there are gores center front, center back, and sides.

So my plan is to make an amalgam of the two.

the jagged ends of the sleeves are not the cuffs; the canvas just wasn't wide enough and i didn't want to adjust it

All that remains now is to determine the size of the pieces, which is actually pretty easy, since I can use the measurements I used for the Viborg shirt. Also, this is basically how I make the undergowns I wear with my apron dresses, so I feel pretty confident with this design.

these are the basic measurements, but I 'm really doing more of the Skjoldehamn tunic neckline and sleeve

So there's the plan. If I can't do the layout efficiently on the fabric I have, I'll put in a shoulder seam. Obviously my fabric is wider than the vadmal made in period, so I have more wiggle room for the layout.

I want to cut tomorrow, but I really need to clean up my cutting table. That shouldn't take too much; I just need to do it.

In the meantime… Night, y'all.
