      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - origin story.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I made this tunic for an ex-boyfriend. Initially I made it too narrow for him, so I had to patch in a couple of panels to make it big enough to fit. Fast forward a decade or so, and I started fighting, so I needed boy clothes to wear with my armor. I found this, and since I am neither 6’4” nor as broad shouldered as he, I decided to remake it for myself, and in the process, finish the seam allowances. Scroll down for the transformation story.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592459709247-XLY7ED1WOUJAUUZXDAKP/103761159_193193662003424_6826974215762883836_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - trim away the fray.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The first job was to trim away the frayed threads so I could see what I was working with, and then take out the panels I had added to make sure the tunic fit him. There was a lot of fraying.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592459922812-4F01NJCXIV6ALMWES8JW/104428406_593995084846029_6618786327587386348_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - attend to the seams.</image:title>
      <image:caption>All the seams needed to be finished For the most part, I even had enough seam allowance to turn them under and flat fell them. Unless I didn’t.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592490234520-BXPACYL3AFA80BI0C8N0/103966344_288230942544757_1518689762028756_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - this one got flat felled.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I pressed the seam allowances open, trimmed one side, then pressed the longer seam allowance over the shorter one, turned the raw edge under, and sewed it down with an overcast stitch. (For more information on flat felling a seam, see my handout: Sewing Sturdy Seams.)</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592460558648-1D2AUGB3USIYPBLNTS2J/103697071_2653929041525069_3128729033991994592_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - …and this one didn’t.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is another method of finishing seam allowances. I don’t usually finish hand-sewn seams like this when I’m working with linen, but as this tunic was originally machine-sewn, I didn’t really worry about it. I pressed the seam allowance open, turned the raw edges under, and sewed the edges down with an overcast stitch. It too gives a neat and tidy finish, and works well when there isn’t enough seam allowance for flat-felling. Sometimes, though, there isn’t even enough edge left for that…</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592460958348-6SACSPK0309F7OOMZO2B/102697342_266268774610644_5172232031800270119_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - this was a fortunate happenstance. no, really.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Luckily, this isn’t a seam I needed to save. This was a seam holding one of the two panels I needed to remove from the tunic to refit it for me. Obviously, though, my lack of finishing caused this seam to entirely fray away at this point, and it would have required patching to repair it.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592462045920-3NANE3B66XFK1XNE0KE1/104776484_275292523811291_3370821213963115996_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - blue linen tunic - this is how you patch a seam.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I patched the areas on seams where it was too badly frayed to sew back together and finish the seam allowances. This patch is on the outside because there was virtually nothing left, and this looked better. Apparently I also tried to sort of darn this area back together as well, but I don’t remember doing that. The nice thing about this being a fighting tunic is that I care somewhat less about how it looks, and thus this was a great project for learning on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending - laundry bag - close enough.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I didn’t have any matching fabric (obviously), so I found some green linen scraps and put patches over the hole. My goal here was to just cover the hole so it didn’t get worse; these bags are quite sturdy and this is really the first one I’ve ever had that showed any actual damage. (I also didn’t care if the thread matched. I think this orange thread looks pretty cute.)</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending - laundry bag - I don’t know where this hole came from.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is a laundry bag I was issued when I was deploying to Kuwait in 2004-2005. I used it all the time, and I don’t remember dragging it on the ground in a way that would cause this hole, so maybe it was there when I got it. But I noticed it one day, and I couldn’t leave it as it was, so here we go.</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending - laundry bag - but wait, there’s more.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is basically the same situation in a different spot on the same bag. I am really not this hard on my stuff; these holes had to have been made by whomever was originally issued this bag.</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending - green wool smokkr - hidden patches.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Because these holes were right there in the bodice of this dress, I decided that I was going to make these patches as unobtrusive as possible by putting them on the inside of the dress.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592538989313-3XI38EZ632B2REOZ7659/103127708_1492814347584951_389753565113688693_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - green wool smokkr - I didn’t even get to wear this dress before the moths got to it.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I made this dress at a workshop several years ago, when I wasn’t playing much. I folded it up and put it away for several years, and the moths got to it… right in the center front.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592539206931-ARAJGDQHIXCOJS1LR60Z/83089274_1526215780918590_996696210849538762_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - green wool smokkr - no fraying to cover.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Moth holes generally don’t have fraying to cope with, just edges where the moths apparently got full. So I put the patches on the inside and stitched around the edges of the hole to prevent further deterioration.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592540241849-WPB0JJLPVH94LE71PNBJ/94991188_234160334490686_7745409748043825152_n%281%29.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - green wool smokkr - hide it under the arm.</image:title>
      <image:caption>My smokkrs have four panels: front back, and both sides. The holes were in the front panel, but since it’s identical to the side pieces, I just ripped the seams and swapped the front with one of the sides. It will still be visible, but not as obvious.</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending - red serk - origin story.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I think I bought this fabric for my late husband, but didn’t get to make it up for him, so it’s mine now. This is one of my favorite serks. I love the color, the quality of the fabric, the fit… I don’t love the fact that I was dumb and didn’t finish the seams. I have repented and made amends (see what I did there?).</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592583821128-KRWV8VY2CKS4ZTESK562/103599908_269632450911101_5112864028350383359_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red serk - finish. your. seams.</image:title>
      <image:caption>When I made this dress, I didn’t finish the seams. I don’t know why I thought I was immune from fraying; it was some sort of sartorial hubris. The seams on this dress were fraying apart, so I made it my mission to flat fell the seams and save one of my favorite garments.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592584105568-LJIHEZNRDZZMTPJ7J240/104091866_2813199785630453_7843122578551512667_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red serk - mostly easy.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Most of the seams had plenty of seam allowance to flat fell them and protect the raw edges, so that went smoothly.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592588807516-KAM75Q6TDJ1P54A4J4PU/104176784_265847561350464_865683881207327199_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red serk - “mostly”.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Actually, once I realized that I didn’t have to put a patch on the outside and therefore didn’t need to match colors, this really was an easy fix. All I needed to do was support the fabric and protect the raw edges that I couldn’t turn under. I took a strip of linen from my scrap bin (scraps were called “cabbage” by Renaissance tailors, so my scrap bin is called “the cabbage patch”), folded the edges under, and stitched it down neatly over the seams that were at risk of fraying away.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592589508206-VE2UXU6CIS8ZT83DRRWY/102702646_259622182026790_9020764463649089137_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red serk - neat, tidy, and workmanlike.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I feel really confident with this repair. It’s closely stitched (I struggle with making larger stitches), so it’s not going anywhere, and because it’s on the skirt of the dress, it’s not under any tension — it just needs to protect the seam from abrasion during washing, which so far it’s doing admirably.</image:caption>

      <image:title>new neckline pattern - but how?</image:title>
      <image:caption>I wasn’t particularly interested in starting from scratch; I really liked the one I had. So I decided to trace the neckline of a serk I made with the original pattern.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ec321c2af33de48734cc929/1589847896255-71GDMB4JOGTFXFRK00TD/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - I had one. it was here somewhere.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The only traceable pattern I use is for a neckline on a serk. When I make serks or smokkrs, I usually just use a drawing of a cutting layout, a yard stick, and some chalk. But I know me, and without something to trace around, my necklines would be ugly and uneven and yeah no. I had one. I lost it. I needed to make a new one.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592628771553-QVPFPZ75OGKV1AK0TWLE/04.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - I used a piece of sketchbook paper.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I folded it, marked where the shoulder seam lies, and traced the edge with a pencil. I ended up doing it twice; the first version was a bit wider than it is when worn.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592629070272-SKXTIENSLSAN9C7KJO8O/05.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - And also the back.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I pinned the paper into the neckline so that it wouldn’t shift when I flipped the serk over to trace the back. It came out... well, scroll down.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592629205141-1UP7AT3N1TUS9JFKQDUC/06.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - This is… not even.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I like the left side, though. Let’s fix this.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592634045867-LKQ7GII4TNURPFFPD6H8/07.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - old tricks.</image:title>
      <image:caption>My mom used to make birthday cakes with these beautiful designs on them. She transferred the designs from paper onto the cakes by laying the paper down on the cake and pricking it with a pin. I took a leaf out of her book and used pricking to transfer the line I liked onto the side I didn’t care for. I folded the outline in half, making sure that the seam markings were lined up, and grabbed a pin.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592632761570-E5ARSRUZGOHPRTM25RY7/09.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - it worked a treat.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I connected the dots with a pen and cut it out, then taped it to a piece of quilting template plastic. I love this stuff. It makes great patterns… which is unsurprising, given its intended purpose.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592632991000-4GHUHMXJF5PPGLNLGECG/14.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>new neckline pattern - this looks so much like the one I lost.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The shape is pretty much what I wanted, so at least my cunning plan actually worked. Next up… actually using it. That should guarantee that I find the original.</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending - red smokkr - not my best decision ever.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This was the second smokkr I ever handsewed. I made it for Yule in 2016, and it’s one of my best-fitting dresses. It has a center back (CB) seam, and I made the mistake of overlapping the edges rather than turning the seam allowances and whipping the turned edges together. Because I sewed through raw edges, and because it’s pretty close to the body, those edges started to fray away.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592716205818-I2122SFRT34O0IYSTDNV/103119504_576062343316053_5495562840842606681_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red smokkr - learn from my fail.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is what happens when you don’t protect your edges. I regret this choice.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592716330427-YLAQATI2KCHVR3Y2JN7P/103843238_364563797839913_3032572414841522770_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red smokkr - I decided to bind the edge.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I had a bit of dupioni silk left over from another project (I bought it from Silk Baron). I cut a strip on the grain and folded it like bias tape, then hand stitched it over the frayed edge. I did find that the silk wanted to fray like crazy as I cut it, and a swipe of a washable glue stick took care of that easily.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592716996084-RCH1GCS163Z4O8NM9QJS/104049871_859469391210724_4213613358976441326_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red smokkr - I’m pretty good at even stitching…</image:title>
      <image:caption>…if I do say so myself.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592717117919-DBUNS867JW4U6DO70G3K/104086227_695694307665774_5497682401716378736_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red smokkr - pin pin, pinny pin pin.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I don’t like using pins; I feel like they distort the fabric and like to get stuck in my hands, but sometimes you just can’t use sewing clips.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ee8f3bc0c057d05c9745f4b/1592717418788-17I9QB86QM4W8Y7MT5JE/104137420_611592766127483_7905444112133904994_n.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>mending - red smokkr - close the seam.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lastly, I sewed the bound edge back down and closed the seam. I now have a strip of silk down the back of my dress, for which I have no documentation. I don’t care. It looks nice and it’s no longer falling apart. Can’t really ask for more. (Okay, yes, I could wish for documentation, but let’s manage our expectations.)</image:caption>
